Lincoln Navigates Through Stars & Road Condition Drive Modes

The Lincoln team studied snowflakes and star placement, clouds and constellations. They have researched everything that is atmospheric to create stunning graphics for the all-new Navigator’s Lincoln drive modes technology.

Meanwhile, Lincoln engineers were targeting sight, sound, touch and feel through Navigator’s steering, suspension, powertrain and torque delivery to tailor its ride and handling for every weather condition ensuring clients experience an effortless and enjoyable drive.

Working together, Lincoln’s design and engineering groups created elegant, intuitive technology that showcases both great beauty and capability.

Drivers can select information from six consumer-friendly modes. Each are controlled by a knob that is easily accessed at the vehicle’s center console.

Three drive modes are terrain and weather related:

  • Deep conditions, for snow, extremely muddy or sandy environments
  • Slippery, for wet or icy conditions
  • Slow climb, for steep terrain

The other three are based on the  a driver desires:

  • Normal, for an effortless, balanced ride
  • Conserve, for efficient driving
  • Excite, for a responsive, engaging ride

The information shown in the cluster changes depending on what mode the client selects. The most relevant information is always present for the driver.

For example, in normal mode a speedometer is present, while in the conserve setting, the speedometer is combined with fuel economy information. “The beauty of these drive modes is they’re intuitive and easy to use,” said Andrew Kernahan, chief engineer, The Lincoln Motor Company. “You don’t have to know how each drive mode is developed, or adjust suspension settings or powertrain mapping. You just have to turn the dial, and the behavior of the vehicle is modified to fit the conditions or desired experience.”

Designed around the theme “Navigation through the Stars,” each drive mode is showcased through intricately detailed graphics while communicating capability. The graphics are displayed only briefly on the cluster so as not to distract, but to assure clients the mode is adjusted correctly.

“As a reference in our research, we looked at everything ­ nebula, Northern Lights and various atmospheric types of conditions,” said Craig Sandvig, digital experience design manager, The Lincoln Motor Company. “We wanted to pay homage to the Earth.”

Sandvig, who began working in digital design six years ago, believes the modes offer a perfect example of digital clusters – intricate globe-shaped artwork showcased with just the push of a button. Getting to that point, however, took several trial runs.

“We worked with hundreds and hundreds of different globes, studying everything from where each cloud would come in and how it would separate from the atmosphere,” he said. “It’s an artistic effect that’s been brought into everything.”

Subtlety was key in creating a luxury feel for each mode, and that’s highlighted throughout the detailing – down to the reflections on each globe. For example, the image in excite mode, representing sporty driving, shows taillights moving in the night to illustrate the thrill of the drive. The look and feel of excite mode exudes a dimensionality that makes clients feel like they’re driving inside the graphic image itself.

For both deep conditions and slippery modes, the team studied placement for each individual snowflake. Deep conditions demonstrates a tire spinning in deep snow, while slippery uses snowflakes and reflections with complex detail down to the lines in the roadway – creating the look and feel of an icy drive.

“It’s amazing to see how much went into the development of slippery mode – we wanted to show the snowflakes going from the front of the globe to the back,” said Sandvig. “We went through several trials for this mode to make sure clients could see the road, so we included dashed lines with certain reflections to give that icy road feel.”

Sandvig said moving into the digital space has allowed the team to create much more detailed imagery for clients, providing technology that’s easy to understand and use.

“The digital space allows us to change and animate things that are not possible within the physical world,” he said. “We were able to create anything we wanted – the modes aren’t required to be static – and we feel that it’s much more rewarding to our clients.”

Matthew McConaughey Sets New Year Beat for Lincoln Navigator

Randall Reed’s Planet Lincoln is ringing in the New Year to a new beat you’ll find in Matthew McConaughey’s new Lincoln Navigator commercial. The longtime Lincoln collaborator showcases the impressive, commanding presence of the full-size luxury SUV.

“Perfect Rhythm,” the first of two spots starring McConaughey and the 2018 Navigator, combines dramatic visuals and eclectic music to drive home the message that the all-new Navigator is a powerful, capable vehicle that elevates travel to a new level of comfort and style.

Perfect Rhythm” premieres Dec. 28 with a 60-second spot on Lincoln’s Twitter and YouTube channels and will then air during the Jan. 1 College Football Playoff as a TV ad. A second spot will air later in the month.

 

“Perfect rhythm refers to the feeling you get in those situations when everything comes together,” said John Emmert, group marketing manager, The Lincoln Motor Company. “This is our most spacious, refined and capable Navigator ever, combining modern luxury with advanced technology that elevates every passenger’s experience.”

The catchy commercial was shot in the Pacific Northwest by noted cinematographer Wally Pfister, who also filmed the “That’s Continental” campaign, and produced by Hudson Rouge. It opens with a distant shot of the Navigator driven by McConaughey, who pulls up to a railroad crossing and stops – although no train is in sight.

He soon becomes both the conductor and lead musician of an impromptu concert.

“This piece is all about energy,” said Emmert. “You see Matthew in control. He starts a rhythm and it builds, and he becomes the master of his experience. We’ve overlaid a complex sound design as a freight train enters the scene and rumbles by. There’s this wonderful crescendo of light and sound that builds and then ends as suddenly as it begins.”

The mood of the piece is a perfect complement to the Navigator, he said. The spot’s high energy captures the capability of the most powerful vehicle in the Lincoln portfolio.

The exterior shots in the ad showcase the Navigator’s signature front grille, while the interior shots highlight the spacious cabin and its serene, horizontal styling.

“Short-form art requires doing a lot in a very short amount of time,” Emmert said. “That’s especially true if you want to convey something emotional, which is the core of our brand. Matthew can communicate so much, so fast, it’s amazing.”

Lincoln’s Head-Up Display Biggest, Brightest in Class

“There’s a lot of physics involved in this system,” said Anthony King, development lead on Lincoln’s all-new head-up display. “But for our clients, it just comes down to the most client-focused usability.”

This means an incredibly sharp and clear head-up display, visible even in the harshest sunlight and through polarized sunglasses. The technology works on a tiny chip that contains 400,000 sturdy mirrors, each with a pixel refresh rate of up to 5,000 hertz operating in synchronized movement to control the system’s optics. In full color, this cutting-edge display appears to actually float just above the vehicle’s hood

“A typical head-up display duplicates information displayed on the cluster,” said King. “But this display makes for a unique and easy-to-use experience for our clients. This eminently visible head-up display and the instrument cluster serve to complement each other to ensure Lincoln clients look forward to every time behind the wheel.”

Lincoln designers emphasized a reduction of screen clutter and focused on the timing and size of the information displayed. Chosen information is displayed only when it’s relevant, and as its importance increases, the physical placement and size of the information presented becomes more prominent. So while current speed and speed limit, as well as time and range are displayed consistently at the lower edge of the screen, should the driver receive a call or a navigation prompt is needed, this information is displayed clearly and brightly with greater prominence.

“What we’ve developed is a leap in the quality and design of head-up display systems,” said King. “You won’t really appreciate all it can do until you get behind the wheel to experience it.”
